THE REASON FOR THE NEED OF THE LMDA

PURPOSE FOR THE LIONS MOBILE DIABETES AWARENESS UNIT

·    Promote the prevention or delayed onset of diabetes and related complications by means of increased public awareness
·    Education – the ultimate benefit of education is the prevention and delaying of the onset of Diabetes
·    Address the specific needs of urban and remote geographic regions and population to be served and that benefit multiple communities
·    Work closely with various diabetes advocacy associations to raise awareness and to educate on the prevention of diabetes
·    Work with  a clinical resource nurse, certified diabetes educator and qualified dietician to provide education on basic diabetes education programs
·    Involvement of Lions throughout the district in fundraising activities
·    Help raise profile of Lions at work in their respective communities throughout District 19A by displaying the Lions emblem on the vehicle, on all the printed
     materials that will be distributed to the public

Goals of this Project

Of the 3.9 million population of British Columbia, 53% (or 2.06 million) live in District 19A which also has a high percentage of high-risks groups.  This two-year project will provide the following:

·    Provide the high-risks people in urban and remote areas of District 19A with education and early detection of Diabetes
·    Raise diabetes awareness among elementary school children in the urban areas of District 19A
·    Provide the Lions in District 19A an on-going district project – the opportunity to involve directly with their communities and be in charge to promote diabetes
     awareness and education on prevention of diabetes.
·    Promote the visibility of Lions getting involved in their communities
·    Raise the profile of Lions in District 19A so as to attract more members as the Lions profile needs to be enhanced here
